Jeddah International Airport by OMA

OMA in the Middle East: Office for Metropolitan Architecture have designed a new international airport for Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

Located between Jeddah and Mecca, the airport will cater for the two million pilgrims who make the journey to Mecca during the holy Hajj period and features a special terminal for the Saudi Royal Family (top two images).

The main terminal is in the shape of a ring with an oasis at its centre and is configured to cope with a massive increase in visitor numbers during the Hajj, while the smaller Royal terminal echoes the form of the larger building.

NEW JEDDAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

For 33 days per year the new Jeddah Airport will host the influx of two million Muslims for the holy Hajj period in Mecca. No other airport in the world can claim such overwhelming specificity of its use. These programmatic requirements form the base for a new approach to both the organization of the airport and its architecture.

Predictability over indeterminacy

Airports come in two sizes: too big and too small. Fundamentally compromised by the necessity to accommodate unpredictable future expansions, airports are ultimately forced to ‘gamble’ on their right size. In terms of its design the airport is condemned to a permanent open end.

With the Hajj as one of the main defining elements, the new Jeddah International Airport presents a unique situation: its expansion is a given in advance, occurring at a fixed moment for a fixed length of time. This relative predictability allows the design of the Jeddah airport to acquire a level of specificity unheard of in a ‘regular’ airport: allowing the rehabilitation of the particular over the general, of centrality over linearity, and of character over blandness.

Arrival over departure

Airports are primarily places one leaves from. With the business trip and the vacation as the airport’s main, perhaps even only, use, the excitement of going away generally outweighs that of coming back.

This discrepancy is also expressed in the design of the airport, with departures generally located in a ‘grandiose space’ on top (mostly under a billowing roof) and arrivals located in a flat utilitarian luggage-collect-space below, making the first acquaintance with a new destination often one of disappointment.

The unique condition and purpose of the new Jeddah International Airport presents us with a compelling reason to consider arriving with the same consideration as leaving. (Mecca you don’t leave, to Mecca you go!)

The surface required by the Hajj equals that of the airport itself. Accommodating the Hajj theoretically means building the same volume twice, with one volume being empty for most of the year. In the current situation this is solved by having the Hajj section as a temporary structure in the form of a big tent.

Design Proposal.

The initial proposal resulted in six different schemes with an emblematic quality. The final design follows the organizing principal of ‘the ring’. Both the main terminal and Royal pavilion with their crescent-like shape enclose an internal oasis that can accommodate different forms of use. The layout of the airport is organized in such a way that Airport and Hajj become a single integrated whole without forcing the airport to double in size.

The design realizes departures and arrivals on the same level allowing both to benefit from the same spatial conditions. The realization of departure and arrival on a single level creates a large surface that equals that of the Hajj, allowing the Hajj to be accommodated on the same footprint as the airport itself. No longer realized as a separate section, the Hajj becomes the almost casual by-product of a particular airport design. The Hajj becomes the invisible twin that – at fixed moments – allows the airport to expand its size.

We just got an email from Mark Friesen, Fujitsu's Chief Designer in Japan, saying that yesterday's dubious Helio prototype is really their now-year-old design: "I'm holding both prototypes right now" he told us, "they were created to explore possibilities for smartphones." Indeed, we featured the other prototype last year. I still want one. Actually, both.

Futuristic Denon Blu-ray player / receiver concept



Denon isn't typically known for throwing out any futuristic pieces of AV luxury, rather, it tends to side with the more traditional, classy look. Of course, there's always a first time for everything, and while we're highly doubtful that this supposed Denon rendering will actually come to fruition, it certainly is a sight to behold. The two-piece kit consists of a rumored DVD-HD8910 Blu-ray player up top, with a 2TB AVR-HD8910 media center / receiver below. The 7.1-channel box also claims to handle iTunes music files and offer a direct connection to the iTMS, and while it's understandably simple to brush this all off as a fanboy's fantasy, Denon's no stranger to stuffing unusual extras in uncommon places.

Here's a design concept that we're wondering why no one has thought of yet: it's a vibrating alarm that you wear on your finger, bypassing all that morning racket for a gentle jostling. Each of the two rings can have its own separate wake-up time, designed for comfort with an elastic band so you'll hardly know you're wearing it.

When you wake up, place the ring on its charging stand, and its indicator light lets you know when its power's replenished.

This design is especially appropriate for two bedmates who must awaken at different times, or for the hearing impaired. However, some users may sleep so deeply they don't even feel that tingling on the finger. Perhaps it could also be designed with aTaser-like electric shock. On second thought, that may not be very popular feature. [Yanko Design]

Why not just call it a layer. The Songjiang, scheduled to be completed in 2009, not only has your traditional spas and conference facilities, but also features bungee jumping off of the top of the quarry, a few underwater guest rooms, a grass-covered roof, several waterfalls (one of which flows down the front of the hotel) and even geo-thermal energy extraction that should be able to power most of the hotel's needs.



Come on US, where are our geo-thermal quarry hotels? All we have are the dancing fountains outside the Bellagio in Las Vegas. [EcoGeek]

Credit cards are a modern way of life these days, but unfortunately for many, it is all too easy to fall into a spiral of debt with little or no hope of getting out. Designer Jacob Palmborg hopes that his design will change that, featuring a credit card that comes with a screen interface that displays important information such as your curreny available balance, recent purchases, and receipts. A fingerprint recognition sensor ensures only you have access to such sensitive data. The best way to cap your credit card spending would be lowering the limit to the bare minimum - that way you won't be shackled by never ending debts.

Scroll cellphone goes back in time

The Scroll cellphone concept from Yun Liang is pretty interesting, taking inspiration from traditional Chinese paintings that must be unfurled before viewing. Whenever you need to access data within the phone, you will need to roll out the scroll, but numeric key functions can be performed otherwise. The advent of flexible displays are definitely a good sign, since it signifies the fact that devices such as the Scroll cellphone can be a reality sometime in the near future, although the idea might not sound too practical. I mean, nothing beats taking a solid phone in my hand and pressing the "Answer" button, right? I see no point reinventing the wheel here.

Powering a car with solar panels is a relatively easy task, but on a motorbike it's a lot harder to find flat surfaces to catch the sun. That means that a solar powered motorbike has got to look rather odd in order to provide enough surface area for the panels: hence the snail shell-like design of SunRed's prototype solar powered bike. When (or if) SunRed completes a real world prototype, the bike's surface area will be 25 square feet, allowing the bike to store enough of the sun's energy to ride for 13 miles at speeds of up to 30 MPH. The motor is integrated into the wheel too, so there's no transmission. Once these "green" bike thinkers sort out the problem of running a bike without oil, we hope they'll move onto making them a little less fugly. It seems like a precedent is being set here.

Looks like designer Hussein Chalayan and Swarovski have came at last with LED clothing that doesn't make you look like an alien (not too much, anyway) or an utterly fashion-blind dork. The dress has two layers, with a translucent fabric covering the LEDs. If you live outside Japan, however, you will have to keep doing your LED garments yourself for now.

The Compenion is a sleek concept laptop designed by Felix Schmidberger. It certainly looks like the kind of portable PC we might be carrying around in 2015, made more futuristic by its OLED touchscreen, which serves as both monitor and keyboard. You can tap away by hand or use the "senstylus" pen to control it, and through a series of docking stations the Compenion will adapt to the environment where you're using it. For example, the home dock might have a projector for viewing video, while the office might include ergonomic stuff like an external keyboard.

As cool as smartphones are, laptops certainly aren't going away, so the Compenion makes a decent case for next-gen mobile computing. Between its sleekness, the OLED touchscreen and innovative modular concept, it's got a lot to going for it. Not sure about that name, though, Felix.
