Greener Spaceflight?

Greener Spaceflight?

In miles-per-gallon, spaceflight doesn't really match up. We're talking gallons per mile - thousands of gallons per mile. But there are benefits to getting things out beyond the atmosphere that make it worth pushing against this crazy gravity well.

NASA scientists have just conducted a test of a new rocket engine using methane, instead of hydrogen.

Liquid hydrogen fuel used by the space shuttle must be stored at a temperature of -252.9°C —only about 20 degrees above absolute zero! Liquid methane, on the other hand, can be stored at the much warmer and more convenient temperature of -161.6°C. That means methane fuel tanks wouldn't need as much insulation, making them lighter and thus cheaper to launch. The tanks could also be smaller, because liquid methane is denser than liquid hydrogen, again saving money and weight.

Methane also gets high marks for human safety. While some rocket fuels are potentially toxic, "methane is what we call a green propellant," Tramel says. "You don't have to put on a HAZMAT suit to handle it like fuels used on many space vehicles."

Methane is also a fuel that appears to be readily found throughout the solar system. And even planets like Mars (the likeliest first step outside our own orbital band) which don't have ready supplies of frozen methane on the surface can provide the raw materials to produce methane from CO2 and hydrogen. Long range human flight programs may be preceded to their destinations by robot factories that will collect and process local methane in order to refuel the spacecraft for the return trip home.

Self-Powered Sky Scraper: 300,000 sq.ft of Solar

Self-Powered Sky Scraper: 300,000 sq.ft of Solar

Written by Matt James
Tuesday, 15 May 2007

Yet another self-powered skyscraper was unveiled recently, stemming from the unlikely combination of German architects and the insanity of Dubai. With plans to rise 68 stories high while providing all its power through solar, wind and water installations, the Burj al Taqa, "Energy Tower", has created quite a buzz.

German engineering company DS-Plan aided architect Eckhard Gerber in designing the structure, which uses a 197-foot roof turbine and 161,459 square feet of solar panels to generate electricity. In addition, a literal island of solar panels in the sea next to the tower provides an additional 182,986 square feet of solar panels. They plan to extract hydrogen from the sea water using excess electricity gained during the day when the solar panels are most active. The hydrogen then will be used as reserve power at night.

To reduce electricity usage, they designed the building to act "like a thermos flask", cooling when hot and retaining heat when cold. Among the many technologies used in the building are new vacuum glazed windows that prevent 2/3 less heat from entering than other windows. To cool the building, a few different systems are used in tandem. Air slits in the building will allow air to be sucked out via "negative pressure created by winds breaking along the tower." Simultaneously fresh air, cooled by seawater and cooling units in the building's cellar, will be pumped into the rest of the building through ducts. Even the ducts are modified, made transparent to reveal gardens hung on the inside. Instead of regular air conditioning, cooled water is run in pipelines under the ceiling of every floor cooling "gently without unpleasant air currents."

Despite the positive feedback from the investment community, the thing that may stop this tower from going up is that no one really knows if it will work. Gerber is unfazed though, noting that investors "have the greatest faith in German engineering."

Although skyscrapers are not generally environmentally friendly, there is little that can stop these from being built in the economic powerhouses of the Middle East. At least if this "Energy Tower" is going to be made, it will be greener than existing towers, setting an example and making it easier and more feasible for buildings in the future to follow suit .

Tech Digest: Top Ten superstar DJ gadgets

djgadgets-hercules.jpgThe wheels of steel aren’t dead; they’re just evolving. While there are still plenty of DJs out there playing vinyl records to adoring crowds of blootered enthusiastic clubbers, new technology is having a big effect on dancefloors around the world.

Think USB mixers, allowing people to DJ from their laptop. Or even standalone decks that you can plug your iPod into. Meanwhile, where traffic lights were once the most high-tech any wedding DJ got, nowadays it’s all lasers and scrolling LED messages. With that in mind, here’s Tech Digest’s pick of ten superstar gadgets for the modern DJ.

1. Hercules Mobile DJ wireless MP3 mixer

This battery-powered two-deck controller lets you mix up a storm with CDs, MP3 tracks and even WAV files (for those essential comedy farmyard noises to play over the sweary bits in some songs). You get two screens built in, and it's wireless, so doesn't need to be tethered to your laptop to control tracks.

Electronista | Dell demos super-thin DisplayPort LCD concept

Electronista | Dell demos super-thin DisplayPort LCD concept

Dell at its Hybrid Business conference yesterday demonstrated what will likely be the future of its computer LCDs with an unnamed concept. The panel uses the recently established DisplayPort video standard to transmit both video and data across a single cable. The technology allows every aspect of a display -- including the demonstrator's speakers, webcam, and touch-sensitive controls -- to run without clutter. It also eliminates a lot of the back-end processing hardware that adds to the bulk of most LCDs, Dell says, allowing the new 0.5-inch thick display to "float" behind a pane of glass rather than depend on a metal or plastic shell. Display resolutions can also be much higher at 3840x2400 without resorting to dual links, as with DVI.

Since the display exists only as an example, no prices or availability were given. Dell said that it does intend to produce DisplayPort LCDs for end users, however, and is mainly dependent on video card manufacturers adopting the standard for output. Notebooks and other all-in-ones will also stand to benefit from the format through their internal connections and may become thinner overall. [via Gearlog]

Digital Cameras: 360 Camera Remains Stationary While Top Rotates

360camera.jpg

Cedric Tay of Yanko Design has dreamed up this 360 Camera, a cylindrical digital camera whose top section rotates to take a series of panoramic pictures while its bottom section remains stationary. Since the bottom part doesn't need to move, it's possible to secure the camera on a tripod and take an accurate series of shots to be stitched together later. The cameras design even includes a built-in inclinometer which helps you make sure it's level before you begin shooting. Take a series of shots, put it into QuickTime VR, and whoever looks at your photos will feel like they are there. It's a design concept—no word if it will actually be manufactured—but let
s hope so.

Some cool USB design concepts were shown in Munich at Universal Connections. Ranging from USB-for-art's-sake to merely fanciful, the show also had items that were almost practical. The USB lock pictured, for example comes very close to being a useful device if the lock hasp wouldn't prevent a connection. The USB bra was my favorite ("Unplug and play!"). Other items, like the USB watch design have already been productized.

Cellphones: Design Concept: Paper Cellphone

Cellphones: Design Concept: Paper Cellphone

paper_phone_cc.jpg

A group of designers have proposed "Paper Says," a cellphone whose electronic innards are recyclable and whose outside is made of paper. The idea would be to rent the low-cost phones to busy travelers, and when the rental period is over the phone can be returned and recycled with a brand-new paper exterior.

The keypad has a tear-away and fold-down design, and since the paper is very thin and light, the LEDs underneath are able to shine through. This is not going to do much for those poseurs who always must express themselves with only the swankiest, shiniest cellphones. But it might do in a pinch.

By the way, see what you can decipher from the nearly-unintelligible story (in Engrish) after the link—it's quite a rough translation.

Gadgets: Design Concept: Nokia Open Cellphone

nokia_open.jpg

Inspired by a Japanese fan, this design concept for a Nokia cellphone uses an as-yet-nonexistent flexible LCD color touchscreen that opens when you push the button in the middle. This piece of fantasy art looks like it would be useful for making video phone calls to your relatives vacationing on Mars.

It's hard to get an idea of the scale of this concept by the artwork, but were hoping it's not too big or it will look like a dildo in your pocket. Designed by Hugo Danti, it won first place in the Nokia 4G Design Competition. As soon as scrollable touchscreen LCDs are invented, this is a design concept that just might work.

The technology is getting close, however. Case in point: Epson's flexible electronic paper, which was announced as a technology demonstration but hasn't been created in any practical way. Yet.

Gadgets: Design Concept: E-Rope Modular Power Strip

The E-Rope Modular Power Strip is a 2006 Idea Award winner designed by Chul Min Kang and Sung Hun Lim. Still in the design concept phase, this is an idea that's bound to take off because not only does it look great but it's functional, too. Its blue lights glow to indicate power is flowing, and if you rotate the socket section 90 degrees, it turns off the current, saving you from that power-sucking standby mode that's so prevalent in many of today's electronic devices. Plus, its modular design lets you add just the right number of outlets needed.

While we're really digging our PowerSquid, the multi-tendriled power strip device thingamajig that gets the job done while offering plenty of separation for all those wall warts, we could use about a dozen of these E-Ropes, too.

Portable Media: Design Concept: Tripod Media Player

If you've ever tried to watch video on an iPod, you know the problem: what do you do with the iPod during the movie? Just hold it in your hand? One guy we know, when he's flying in a plane, uses a flimsy plastic cup handed out by flight attendants as an iPod holder.

Lisa Kohanshis designs away that problem with flexible screen technology incorporated into a stand-up screen idea using a triangle motif. It's a small triangle that fits in your pocket when you're listening to music, and when you want to watch a movie, you pull it apart, unraveling its flexible OLED display. Speakers are mounted in the top of the two triangles, aiming right at your ears. Remove its embedded triangular-shaped remote to control the movie from afar. Somebody build this one, stat.

Gadgets: Design Concept: Moov Bike

Yes, this is a design concept, it's called Moov, and it lets the rider change the separation between the rear wheels, enabling spectacular acrobatic stunts. Using what he calls "biomechanical muscles" to make it work, student designer Jean-Michel Raad created this concept which won first prize at the Coventry University MA Design Show. This is one bike design we'd like to see built.

Gadgets: Design Concept: Cutting Board with Embedded Scale

cuttingscale.jpgThis design concept by Jess Griffin and Jim Termeer is a cutting board with an embedded scale in a circular area on its right half, telling you the exact weight of those ingredients you're about to place into your recipe or on your plate. The 10"x15" cutting board is designed to use electronic ink to display weight, with embedded sensor grids underneath the surface to determine the downward force of objects placed on it.

Don't be getting out that credit card just yet; the designers say the technology to build the thing is between one and five years away. The electronic ink display technology will be possible between one and five years from now, the low-current photovoltaics specified as its power source will be practical in one to three years, and the embedded sensor grids are also one to three years away.

We're thinking this is almost feasible now, but still cost-prohibitive for incorporation into a consumer product. Great idea for chefs and dieters, too, though. Maybe it could be done with more-conventional tech.

The only thing the artist left out is GPS capability, a highly desirable feature for runners and walkers. Adding navigation, distance traveled and thermometer functionality on board similar to this klunky-looking Paroos GPS trainer we showed you yesterday would be all that's necessary to turn this into a complete design. So far, though, we like this concept a lot.

samsung_sliq.jpg

It's been a while since a cellphone has filled us with as much lust as this SLIQ design. It's a concept by Mike Serafin with no keypad and what he calls an "advanced touch interface." It better be pretty advanced, because we haven't been all that impressed with touch interfaces thus far.

Its illustrations have the Samsung logo either proudly or hopefully displayed, but we're not sure if this is a Samsung-authorized design or not. Besides its good looks, the concept has one particularly unusual feature we've never seen in a cellphone before.

Get this, the most unusual feature: it has a crank that powers it up, so maybe it doesn't even need batteries. Neat. check out these design sketches:

sliq_design_sketches.jpg

Also included in this possibly vaporware concept is a 2-megapixel camera with a Schneider-Kreuznach lens that looks like it retracts into the phone's slightly bulging top section. Even with that camera goodness, the design calls for an ultra-thin profile of a mere 10mm. Its shiny toy-like form factor with its sexy disappearing LCD screen really gets us going. OK, back in our holes.

Concept Audi stars in the futuristic film I, Robot

Concept Audi stars in the futuristic film I, Robot

From one “future reality” film, let us move on to another futuristic concept. The film I, Robot starred by Will Smith, is a movie based on the classic short story compilation by Isaac Asimov. It takes place during the year 2035, where robots have become a household item, and everybody trusts them except for one paranoid detective (Smith) who is investigating on a crime which he alone believes is perpetrated by a robot.

But one of the biggest spectacle of the movie was the starring role of the Concept Audi sports coupe. Previously, German luxury car maker Audi has supplied production cars to Hollywood moviemakers. But in joining forces with Twentieth Century Fox, Audi has, for the very first time, developed a unique concept car specifically for a Hollywood film.

Audi designers have created a car for a fictional future that strongly interprets the futuristic language of Audi's car design. It also incorporates the ideas of the film's director Alex Proyas.

Concept Lexus is Speilberg's prodigy

Concept Lexus is Speilberg's prodigy

The whole futuristic concept of the film Minority Report did not just begin and end in the plot of the story. There would have to be a lot of hard work especially with the production. The greatest challenge would be to make the setting 50 years advanced, which was an era that is yet to be discovered. And at the same time, it would have to look convincing enough to us---the people of the present time.
From the outset, director Steven Speilberg was not interested in creating a science fiction film, but rather, a reality future film. So hence he called upon a team of people who could brainstorm with him what the future will probably look like. And this includes the transport system, ingeniously crafted which was only strengthened by the debut of the 2054 Red Lexus Sports Coupe. "I've been driving a Lexus SUV," Spielberg said. "And I thought Lexus might be interested in going into a speculative future to see what the transportation systems and cars would look like on our highways in 50 years. The result of that exploration is something that elevates and transforms driving into an environmental experience."
This futuristic Lexus - designed as a high-performance, two-seat personal sports car - flexes a muscular design with the ultimate in cab-forward seating; a low, enclosed wheelbase for sportiness; aggressive lines, and proportions so unexpected that, at first glance, it's not entirely evident which end is the front and which is the rear. It includes features like Heads-Up instrumentation with Night Vision and Organic Recognition capability, Color-impregnated, Carbon composite body panels with dent-resistant memory, Body conforming bucket seats with automatic heating and cooling functions, Laser Guided Cruise Control, Stereolithography formed body panels, Body panels color selectable by owner voice recognition, All systems fully computer-controlled with Voice-Activated and Gesture-Recognition capability, Sonar Parking Assist and others. This innovative take at the “Car of the Future” surely hit the big screen with a bang, and it awed all its audiences.

GM Places the Toyota crushing Chevy Volt in Production Slot for 2010

GM Places the Toyota crushing Chevy Volt in Production Slot for 2010

In a surprising turn of events, it appears as though GM has announced plans to produce the Eco-friendly Chevy Volt. A recent article at AutoBlogGreen.com, points to news on General Motor’s (GM) Concept Chevy Volt.

“This news comes courtesy of General Motors Larry Burns, GM’s vice president for research and development and Jim Queen, group vice president of global engineering. It is no secret that the Volt was a huge hit for GM at the Detroit Auto Show this year, and as our own statistics show, it was a hit with consumers who research their vehicles on the internet as well…According to Automotive News, GM has decided to go ahead with the development of both the original Volt concept with its internal combustion engine powering a generator which is capable of charging the on-board lithium ion batteries as well as the more recent fuel cell platform which uses an on-board hydrogen fuel-cell to provide a range-extending charge to said batteries.” (SOURCE)

Chevy Volt

In a previous post by Market Matador, we uncovered the “The Future of the Automobile and Alternative Energy.” The article discussed GM’s Volt and the suggestion that the car could get up to 150 MPG and run on Flex-Fuel technology (E-85 or traditional gasoline). We never expected it would go to production. For now, it looks like General Motors may actually have a bullish outlook, but purchases of GM should wait until more details emerge about the futuristic car and its production.

9804399_941dd2c22eFour full years before that day when New York’s Freedom Tower swings its doors open for business, the Burj Dubai Tower (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) continues its lofty climb into the sky. Earlier this year the skyscraper had eclipsed the Empire State Building in overall height. As of this writing, it has trumped the former twin towers of the World Trade Center. Very soon it should surpass America’s tallest building, Chicago’s Sears Tower, as it continues its bold, unprecedented push into the sky.

Deemed a “super-tall” construction by celebrated architect Adrian Smith (formerly of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill - the group currently working on Manhattan’s Freedom Tower), the Burj Dubai is moving into uncharted territory and pushing for a world record height that remains a well-guarded secret. “Emaar, our client, definitely wants Burj Dubai to be the tallest building in the world upon completion” says Smith. “We may include elements that can grow during construction, if needed. You know from the history of the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building that height can be added to the design during construction.”

An overall height around the 2,600’ level is casually tossed about by insiders, with staggering marks well over 3000’ also reported, although few believe the tower will make it this high. For some well-needed perspective it’s worthy to note that the world’s tallest building, Taipei 101, stands only 1,671’ above street level, nearly 1000’ lower than the likely target point for this formidable giant in the making.

A look at other notable skyscrapers shows just how special this building will be. Former world champion Petronas Towers (Kuala Lumpur) tags in at 1,483.’ America’s reining champ Sears Tower stretches to 1, 451,’ while the iconic Empire State Building, famous for oversized apes, off-course airplanes and helpless damsels, seems almost lost amongst theses cloud-splitters at a paltry 1, 250.’ Surprisingly, for all its celebration and hoopla, New York’s long anticipated Freedom Tower will push its spire to a symbolic, if downright measly 1,776.’ Not exactly a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

The Burj Dubai Tower will be at least 160 stories tall, a figure that plops another 50 stories onto the old record of 110 held by Chicago’s Sears Tower. In keeping with the project’s mysterious nature, its elevators inexplicably read up to 195 floors, strongly suggesting that the final tally may be higher still.

Construction of the building has progressed at an absurdly rapid rate, particularly when compared to red tape laden super-projects currently underway in the United States. Other than a brief work stoppage due to a labor dispute and subsequent strike, the building has made magnificent strides since it first broke ground on February 1st, 2005. If all goes well, the project should “top out” in June, 2009.

No matter what height the Burj Dubai finally claims for itself, one thing seems certain. America’s proud heritage of hosting the world’s tallest buildings has now been obliterated by hungry, well-heeled nations on the rise, and the trend promises to continue, at least for the foreseeable future. As things stand it would likely take a substantial shift in America’s economic climate/mindset to regain the title. A maverick spirit, a boatload of cash and the unbridled chutzpah to once again “go tall” could put the Stars and Stripes back in the running, although at present no one seems to be stepping up to the plate.
In the meantime, the Burj Dubai Tower, lofty beggar of superlatives, will be looking down on all of us. Literally.
